THINGS TO DO IN NANAIMO THIS WEEKEND

THE LAST WEEKEND OF 'SUMMER' ENJOY IT

As the last weekend of summer before the kids are back in school, the weatherman looks like he will remain consistent to his usual plans. Don't let that dull your weekend as there are still many enjoyable things to do.

The Farmers Market is open on Friday from 10:00am - 2:00pm in the plaza beside the Bastion right downtown. Fresh produce, baking and much more make this a popular weekly event. While you are there be sure to take in the cannon firing and take advantage of a last trip through the Bastion. If you have not seen the museum lately be sure to put them on your 'to do' list as well.

A stroll along the seawall taking in the ever-changing waterfront is always a relaxing and pleasant way to spend an hour or two. While at Maffeo Sutton Park, you could hop the harbout ferry for a 45 minute harbour tour, or take the same ferry and visit Newcastle Island.

Westwood Lake and Long Lake are still good bets for freshwater swimming, with Departure Bay and Pipers Lagoon providing a saltwater alternative.

There is the last Free Dance in the Park this Friday Aug. 31 at the Lions Pavilion in Maffeo Sutton Park. More details are available by clicking here.

Sat. Sept. 1, is the 10th annual Cans Food Festival hosted by the Old City Quarter merchants. This worthwhile event helps the Loaves and Fishes Food Bank. You donation of 2 cans of food, or 2 non-perishable food items will get you a 'taste' of food from the participating restaurants. Food is also available for $1.00 per taste. Proceeds go to a worthy local cause, so be sure to get out and support it. The Old City Quarter is on Fitzwilliam Street, with the most obvious landmark being St. Andrews United Church.

Have a great weekend and let's hope the weathman got the forecast wrong!
