WHAT TO DO IN NANAIMO THIS WEEKEND

LOOK FOR A SILVER LINING
BUT TAKE YOUR UMBRELLA ANYWAY!

If the weather man is right there will be liquid sunshine likely this coming weekend. It would seem he is much more accurate predicting rain than he is sunshine, so be sure to take your umbrella.

I am sure the organizers of the Vancouver Island Exhibition hope the weatherman is wrong, as the big fair opens this Friday and continues Saturday and Sunday. For more details click V.I.E.X. here. For the V.I.E.X. entertainment line up click here.

The organizers of the Nanaimo Blues Festival will also be hoping for dry weather, as their festival kicks off Fri. at 3:00pm a the the Harbourfront Plaza on Commerical Street. This is in front of the library, if you are unfamiliar. For festival schedule information click Nanaimo Blues Festival info here. (You will need a pdf reader)

Rain or shine won't affect the Glad and Dahlia Society's big show at Country Club Mall. The show is on Saturday 9:30 am - 5:00 pm and Sunday from 11:00 am - 5:00 pm. You will have the opportunity to purchase some show stoppers at the end of the show.

Even without these great events, there is always something fun to do in Nanaimo on any weekend if you think about it. A few idea starters would be, Farmer's Market on Friday by the Bastion from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. Tour the Bastion, and witness the noon cannon firing, check out the Museum while you are right downtown.

Stroll along the waterfront starting at the boat basin by the Bastion and follow it all the way to the Yacht Club and beyond. There is always something of interest on the ever changing waterfront. Start at the basin, stroll past the floating restaurants, unique shops, Swy-a-lana Lagoon and Maffeo Sutton Park. You can grab a Harbour Ferry from Maffeo Sutton Park and tour the Harbour or go over to Newcastle Island.

While you are at Maffeo Sutton Park, you can pick up a bite from one of the vendors, watch a pick up basketball game or what have you. Then along over the Lions Bridge, over the Millstone River and along to the Yacht club and beyond.

Don't forget the acres and acres of great parks Nanaimo has to offer including freshwater swimming at several popular spots. Westwood Lake, Coliery Dam, and Long Lake being among the most popular. If lake or ocean swimming is not your thing, there is also the pools at Beban, Bowen and the Aquatic Centre on Third St. For City pool swimming information click Swimming Info here.

Have a great weekend, even if the weatherman is right, and of course you can always hope he is wrong, and that we have a lovely warm, dry weekend. But just in case, take the umbrella!
