NANAIMO ROOMING HOUSES

CITY COUNCIL TO LOOK
INTO ROOMING HOUSES

It is reported in the local press, that the City of Nanaimo will be looking into the matter of legalizing rooming houses. At present rooming houses are not a legal form of housing within the city.
However, just like illegal suites they are allowed to exist even though they are not inspected, nor required to meet safety standards.
Of course, this could be a prime example of government involvement creating more problems than it solves. If 'safety' regulations become cost prohibitive then owners of such houses would simply have to close them, which would add to the already serious issue of homelessness in Nanaimo.
I would suggest that such homes only be required to meet the same standards as any single family dwelling. After all, if a family consists of mom, dad and ten kids, that home would not be required to be any 'safer' than the house next door occupied by a single person.
