A West Coast Air pilot and his five passengers had a close call last Monday while attempting to land in Nanaimo harbour.
The incident which occurred last Monday was only reported in the local press today.
Apparently in an incident being reported as pilot error the aircraft sustained damage to its wing, wing struts, tail and floats as the pilot aborted his landing due to fog in the harbour.
When the pilot decided to abort the landing and 'go around' for a second attempt the plane clipped the tree tops causing anxious moments for all aboard.The pilot was able to safely land the plane in the harbour.
Company spokesman said the pilot who has over 18000 hours of flying experience has been let go. The damaged aircraft is being repaired and should be back in service soon.
Transport Canada is investigating the incident for possible regulatory infractions.
Float plane traffic in and out of Nanaimo harbour is a regular occurrence and incidents of any kind are very rare.
