NEW GROUP SEEKS RAILROAD FUNDING

Funds Sought to Rebuild the E&N
Rail Line on Vancouver Island

A new coalition made up of First Nations, Island Corridor Foundation and the Southern Railway of Vancouver Island, calling itself Our Corridor Foundation is seeking funding from senior levels of government.

A coalition spokesman said the rail ties, rails and some bridges are in need of repair or replacing on the long neglected E&N Rail corridor.

The cost to bring the line up to North American standards is said to be nearly $104 million, which is what the coalition wants Ottawa and the province to anti up. Saying this would be a good step in reducing greenhouse gases by removing many transport trucks from Island Highways.

The rail line covers over 290 kilometers of track and would generate some 1,000 jobs over a three to five year period.

The intent would be to make the line a major freight and commuter rail service which would serve most of Vancouver Island.
