Better Health Plan For Councillors

Nanaimo Council Give Themselves
Another Raise!

It is reported in the local press that City Council has voted to improve their health care coverage.

Their current plan pays 80% coverage for medical and dental and will increase to 100% coverage. There will also be a $400 optical benefit every two years which is not included in the current plan.

This coverage will give council members the same benefits as city staff enjoy.
The cost to the taxpayer for the benefits to the nine members is reported as $399 per months which works out to $4788 per year.

Editors Comment: The differences between the private and public sector are once again made apparent in this example. Few private companies having to remain competitive could afford such benefits for their employees. However, it seems the taxpayer is stuck in the unfortunate position of not being able to take their business someplace else, if they are unhappy with how they are being taxed.
I also have to wonder if the members would be willing to pay an additional $532 a year for the increased benefit if they had to pay for it themselves.
