Nanaimo Casino Expansion Proposed

Great Canadian Casino in Nanaimo
To Double Existing Size
The local press reports a development proposal has been submitted to the City of Nanaimo. The proposal would see the existing Casino adjacent to the Port Place Mall more than double in size.

The proposal would call for the construction of a new 23,000 square foot building facing Terminal Ave. with underground parking for 200 vehicles.

The second phase would see the demolition of the existing casino and the construction of 22,000 square feet of casino space with the addition of another 280 underground parking spaces, as well as more surface parking area.

A large glass entrance would face Gordon Street and the new Vancouver Island Conference Centre which is in the Port of Nanaimo Centre. The conference center is due to open in June of this year.

This proposal comes at the same time that Port Place Mall is being prepared for a major renovation by the new owners.

Mayor Korpan is pleased to see evidence that the revitalization plans for downtown Nanaimo are beginning to pay off. The mayor further said that at first he was uncertain about having a casino downtown, but they have proved to be a good citizen and problems have not materialized.

If it goes ahead the casino expansion would also provide some more jobs and help diversify the Nanaimo job base which has faced some challenges of late.

Combined with the Vancouver Island Conference Center, the new Museum, and new retail space in the Port of Nanaimo Centre, downtown Nanaimo should be well on the way to becoming the vibrant core of the city it once was.
