Nanaimo Sports and Entertainment Center

Larry McNabb to ask City staff to investigate site for sports multiplex
Quoted in the local press as saying a Mulitplex on the assembly wharf property, adjacent to Port Place Mall, would make downtown 'just perfect'.

At this point McNabb has served a notice of motion to ask city staff to investigate suitable downtown sites for the sports mulitplex.

The local Port Authority says the 40 acre assembly wharf could support a multiplex in addition to their plans for a new cruise ship terminal. Of course it would involve discussion with Ottawa before anything could be finalized.

You will recall plans had been put together by Calgary interests for a 5200 seat multiplex but were put on the shelf for lack of city financial support.

Of course the Port of Nanaimo Centre which houses the Vancouver Island Conference Center and the new Nanaimo Museum, have been the major financial project for the past few years.

Mayor Korpan is quoted as saying the city has always been willing to support some form of sports multiplex, but the question of course is who will pay for it.

The Mayor is not aware of any private developers lobbying the city to build a sports complex at this time.
