Nanaimo Residents Aid RCMP

Two Weekend Arrests Aided by Alert Citizens

On May 4th, 2008 at approximately 10:00am, Nanaimo RCMP received a 911 call, reporting that a male had broken into a residence in the 1800 block of Evergreen Way. While police were en route, the suspect fled the residence. The Police Service Dog was dispatched to the scene and a perimeter was set up to contain the area.

Prior to the arrival of the Dog Unit, a resident on Latimer Street alerted police that he observed a male ducking into a bush near his residence. Police attended and located the male in the bush, determined that he was the suspect in the break in on Evergreen Way, and subsequently placed him under arrest. The police dog tracked from the residence on Evergreen Way directly to the suspect’s location.
Further investigation revealed that the suspect, a 28 year old Nanaimo man, had committed a second break in a short distance away. Property from that break in was found in his possession.

Later that same day, at approximately 11:45 hours, a second 911 call was received. This time, from a caller reporting that a male was assaulting and threatening a female in a bush area near Albert Street and Pine Street. The suspect male fled on foot and the Police Service Dog was dispatched to the area once again.
Neighbours in the area, directed police in the direction where the suspect had run. A final tip indicated that the suspect had just run though a back yard on Dundas St. Using this information, the police dog successfully tracked this male to a bush area near Dundas Street and Bruce Avenue. The 30 year old Nanaimo man was taken into custody without incident.
The female victim left the area, and has not yet been identified. Anyone with information about this incident or the identity of the victim is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP at 754-2345. Those wishing to report information anonymously can do so by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
