Female Driver Assaulted by Hitchhiker

Nanaimo RCMP Warn Public

Nanaimo RCMP are advising motorists to use caution when stopping for hitchhikers, after a female driver was assaulted on Tuesday, June 3rd, in Nanaimo.

A 51 year old female was eastbound on Cedar Rd, at approximately 1:00am, near the Nanaimo Municipal Landfill, when she stopped to pick up a male hitchhiker. The female stopped her vehicle in front of the Landfill and the male got into the passenger side of her vehicle .Once inside, he immediately threatened her and told her to drive to a secluded area .

When the female refused, the male physically assaulted her .The female fought back and managed to get out of the vehicle, run to an adjacent residence and called for police assistance. The female sustained minor facial injuries. RCMP conducted patrols for the suspect but were unable to locate him.

The suspect was described as being of average height and weight and dressed all in black. Any one who saw a male hitchhiking in or around the Nanaimo Landfill on Cedar Rd on June 3rd at 1:00 am is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP. If they do not wish to give their name or get involved they can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
