BOY HANDLED RABID BAT AT COLIERY DAM ON FRIDAY

PERHAPS CODY?

It is reported in the local press that a boy turned a bat into a health officIal at Coliery Dam on Friday.

Tests have shown the animal positive for having the deadly virus rabies.

The problem is identifying the boy who is not known to even be from Nanaimo.

It is being reported that possibly the boys name is Cody who found the bat with a group of children on a swimming raft.

While the boy is not in immediate peril it is important he be tended to by a physician as untreated rabies is fatal once the virus reaches the brain.

However, only 15% of people wind up being infected but the risk is not one that should be ignored.

Anyone with information about who this boy is should call the communicable disease office at 250-740-2615.

As bats are a primary source of rabies infection people are reminded not to touch live or dead bats.
