Nanaimo House Fire Claims 8 yr. old Girl

A house fire this morning in the six hundred block of Georgia Ave claimed the life of an eight year old girl.

Nanaimo Fire and Rescue responded to the call at 0855 am and arrived on scene within minutes to find one side of the duplex fully engulfed in flames . Neighbors told investigators the mother Andrea Sam and her four children lived in the residence. Andrea Sam was asleep and awoke to find the residence fully engulfed. She was able to remove three of her children but due to the heat and flames could not get to her daughter who was sleeping in a separate room. Marsha Sam, age 8 died as a result of the fire.

Nanaimo RCMP along with Fire investigators and the BC Coroners Office were on scene most of the morning attempting to determine the cause of fire. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800 -222-TIPS
