Things To Do in Nanaimo This Weekend

Nanaimo's Fresh Air
and Great Outdoors is Calling

With the high price of gas, why not plan a Nanaimo vacation this year, or at least this weekend. The list of inviting parks is nearly endless but some of the more popular are Pipers Lagoon, Westwood Lake, Long Lake, Divers Lake, Colliery Dam, Swy-a-lana lagoon and of course there is the always inviting seawall along the harbour and Newcastle Channel.

You can always take a mini sea cruise across the harbour to Newcastle Island aboard one of the 'Pickle Boats' docked at Syw-a-lana lagoon park. You can pack a picnic lunch and make a day of exploring the island with it's limestone mining relics and reminders of the coal mining days. You can also enjoy a first class bowl of clam chowder at restaurant in the pavillion. It is one of the best chowders around!

If you have never explored Gabriola Island you might consider taking your car and making another day trip to the island which is almost in Nanaimo but not quite.

If you are in good shape you might consider making the hike to the top of Mt. Benson for a one of a kind view of our lovely city. Take your time and be prepared for a real hike. Good shoes, walking stick. lots of water, energy bars etc.

On Friday there is always the downtown Farmer's Market beside the Bastion, from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Time it right and you can witness the cannon firing at noon as well. Then take a tour of the Bastion if you haven't been for awhile. Then stroll downtown and see the new convention center and the many changes in the downtown core.
