UNUSUAL BEAR ATTACK IN SOOKE

On the 9th of September, 2008 at 17:19 hours, BC Ambulance in Port Renfrew reported that a male had been attacked by a bear in Port Renfrew.

Two males were fishing when a bear swam towards the boat and jumped aboard. One of the two occupants threw the fish overboard, hoping the bear would follow, however, he was still attacked.

The male suffered bite marks to his shoulder and arm. Unknown locals assisted in fending off the animal, eventually killing it by gaffing it in the neck. A Conservation Officer attended and was investigating. Police attendance was not needed.

The victim was transported to Royal Jubilee Hospital by air ambulance and required surgery.
