CONSERVATIVES RETURNED TO POWER

PRIME MINISTER HARPER
RETURNS TO OTTAWA
WITH A STRONGER MINORITY GOVERNMENT
WHILE LIBERALS LOOSE GROUND

Prime Minister Stephen Harper promises he and his party will deliver on their promise to guide Canada through the present economic turmoil.

While not completely official the Conservatives are elected or leading in 143 seats, the Liberals leading or elected in 77 seats and the NDP leading or elected in 37 seats while the Bloc are leading or elected in 48 with 2 independents holding the other 2 seats.

The two Nanaimo ridings have not changed since the last election with James Lunney of the Conservatives holding his seat and Jean Crowder of the NDP also returning to Ottawa.

In the Province of British Columbia the Conservatives captured nearly 46% of the popular vote while the NDP actually dropped 3% in the popular vote from the previous election.

Speculation about Stephane Dion's leadership are already making the news after his party was unable to retain the 95 seats they previously held.

Overall voter turnout coast to coast was reported as being just over 51%.

During his address in Calgary the Prime Minister repeated many of the promises highlighted during his campaign which included:

  • keep taxes down
  • keep budgets balanced
  • keep spending under control
  • stand up for working families
  • strengthen the criminal justice system
  • make real progress on the environment
  • keep this great country united, strong independent and free
