NANAIMO ROOMING HOUSES TO BECOME LEGAL

LOW COST HOUSING TO BE LEGAL

Currently Nanaimo has no bylaws which cover rooming houses, with the result that a closure order is the only alternative if one comes to light.

That will change soon as the City of Nanaimo drafts bylaws which would seem rooming houses with up to 10 rooms becoming legal if they meet minimum fire and safety standards.

As many as 100 rooming house could already be operating in Nanaimo which for the most part are being ignored. This new set of bylaws would provide a good form of low cost housing while at the same time ensuring the safety of people residing in such housing.
