GRIZZLY BEAR ATTACK


On November 19th, 2008 at approximately 12:15pm, Port Hardy RCMP were notified an adult male was attacked by a grizzly bear.

An adult male from Port Alberni was working for a Shake and Shingle company at Strachan Bay in Mereworth Sound. The male was attacked by a Grizzly Bear. The male was airlifted out of Strachan Bay by a company helicopter. The male was brought to Port Hardy Hospital and transferred shortly thereafter to a hospital down island. The male was in critical condition.

This attack happened in an isolated area. No one is in danger at this time. This is a Conservation lead investigation. The Port Hardy RCMP are rendering assistance wherever possible.

The Wildlife Attack Team has been deployed and will be attempting to track down the grizzly bear. The Wildlife Attack Team is composed of Conservation Officers who specialize in certain techniques.

The name of the injured and the company he works for, will not be released at this time due to a pending investigation.

Mereworth Sound is located on the West Coast Mainland of British Columbia, just North-West of Northern Vancouver Island.
