A car crash on Saturday November 1 in Nanaimo at the intersection of Spruston Rd and the Trans Canada highway has claimed the life of one of its passengers.Zachary Daniel PEARDON age 17 of Courtenay, a passenger in a van driven by a sixteen year female died died at Victoria General Hospital Sunday evening from injuries sustained in the accident.
The incident reported at approximately 8:30 am on November 1 involved a passenger van, containing eight teenagers from the Comox, Courtenay, Campbell River area colliding with a south bound pickup driven by a 35 male resident of Nanaimo. The sixteen year old female driver of the van was attempting to turn left across two southbound lanes when her vehicle was struck broad side by the pickup. The driver of the pickup sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital and later released.
Injuries were extensive to the occupants of the van requiring several passengers be airlifted to hospitals in Nanaimo, Victoria and Vancouver. Traffic analysts were called to the scene and the highway was closed for several hours while investigators examined the crash scene. All parents and guardians of the teens have been notified and their respective high schools have contacted grief counselors to be on hand to assist other students with processing the incident.
Investigators have determined the youths had attended and all night Halloween party at the end of Spruston Rd and were leaving the area when the accident occurred. Alcohol is not considered be a contributing factor. The female driver was in possession of a Learners drivers license and many of the seats in the van had been removed to allow for more passengers. No charges have been laid to date and the Nanaimo RCMP Traffic section have assumed the lead role in the investigation.
