NANAIMO VOTING PLACES AND VOTER QUALIFICATIONS

NANAIMO CIVIC ELECTION VOTING PLACES
AND QUALIFICATIONS TO VOTE

GENERAL VOTING DAY will be open to qualified electors of the City of Nanaimo on Saturday, November 15, 2008 between the hours of 8 am and 8 pm at the following locations:

• Brechin Elementary School 510 Millstone Avenue
• Chase River School 1503 Cranberry Avenue
• Christ Community Church 2221 Bowen Road
• Departure Bay Activity Centre 1415 Wingrove Street
• Dodd Narrows Room, Port of Nanaimo Centre 80 Commercial Street
• Frank J. Ney School 5301 Williamson Road
• Georgia Avenue School 625 Georgia Avenue
• McGirr School 6199 McGirr Road
• Nanaimo Aquatic Centre 741 Third Street
• Nanaimo Regional General Hospital * 1200 Dufferin Crescent [10 am - 4 pm]
• Protection Island Fire Hall * 26 Pirates Lane [10 am - 6 pm]
• Randerson Ridge School 6021 Nelson Road
• St. Andrews Presbyterian Church 4235 Departure Bay Road
• Uplands Park School 3821 Stronach Drive

Note that you may vote at ANY of the polling stations in the Municipal Election.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR VOTING

Resident Electors

If you are not on the list of electors and you live within the City of Nanaimo, you may register at the time of voting by completing the required application form available at the Voting Place.

You will be required to produce two (2) pieces of identification (at least one with a signature). Picture identification is not necessary. The identification must prove both residency and identity.

To register as a resident elector, you must meet the following qualifications:

• age 18 years or older on Voting Day
• a Canadian citizen
• a resident of BC for at least 6 months immediately preceding Voting Day
• a resident of the City of Nanaimo for at least 30 days immediately preceding Voting Day,

and,

• not otherwise disqualified by law from voting.

ID Required to Register for Municipal Elections

Acceptable forms of Identification include the following:

• BC Driver’s Licence
• BC ID Card from Motor Vehicle Branch
• ICBC Owner’s Certificate of Insurance and Vehicle Licence
• BC Care Card
• Ministry of Employment and Income Assistance / Ministry of Housing and Social Development - Request for Continued Assistance Form (stub)
• Social Insurance Card
• Citizenship Card
• Property Tax Notice
• Credit card or Debit card
• Utility bill for electricity, natural gas, water, telephone or cable services

Non-Resident Property Electors

If you own property in the City of Nanaimo but reside elsewhere, you may be eligible to vote as a Non-Resident Property Elector. In order to qualify to vote as a Non-Resident Property Elector you must meet the following criteria:

• age 18 years or older on Voting Day;
• a Canadian citizen;
• a resident of BC (as per s.52 of the Local Government Act) for at least 6 months prior to Election Day;
• must not be entitled to register as a resident elector;
• must have been a registered owner of real property in the City of Nanaimo 30 days immediately preceding Voting Day; for at least
• not otherwise disqualified by law from voting.

A person may register as a Non-Resident Property Elector in relation to only one parcel of real property within the City of Nanaimo.

Persons qualifying as Non-Resident Property Electors who will be applying to register at the time of voting, must complete an application form, must produce 2 pieces of identification (at least one with a signature) to prove identity, and must provide acceptable proof of ownership of the property to which you are registering.

If more than one individual is the registered owner of the real property, only one of those individuals may register and the person registering must do so with the written consent of the number of those individuals who, together with the person registering, are a majority of registered owners.

Note: Only an individual is eligible to register as a Non-Resident Property Elector. Corporations, or those holding property in trust for a Corporation, are ineligible to vote as a Non-Resident Property Elector.
