Your Civic Duty
Winston Churchill is quoted as saying “Democracy is the worst form of government except for all those others that have been tried.”
Be that as it may, democracy is a freedom and a duty which we seem to have become very apathetic towards in recent years. I believe the last Civic Election saw less than 40% of eligible voters actually going to the polls to cast their ballot.
Why? Some people with a pessimistic bent will rationalize that it doesn’t really matter who you vote for, they all just do the same thing anyway and that usually means it will cost me more money.
Perhaps some don’t vote because they have never taken the time to get actively involved in what their politicians are doing and what these elected officials stand for. They seem more apathetic than pessimistic in that they just never take the time to get involved.
Some maybe are just plain too lazy to take the time to get involved and are content to just ignore the whole process and live with whatever decisions elected officials make.
It would be hoped that a large majority of citizens would take the time to play their part in democracy which really only works to it’s full potential when it is influenced by participants who have taken the time to know the issues and the candidates and make a reasoned decision on election day.
This coming Saturday be sure to do your part in the process and cast your ballot for your choices of Mayor, City Council and local School Board.
It is YOUR City so do YOUR part on Saturday and get out and vote!
If you will be unable to vote on Saturday there is an advance poll open today from 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM in the Port of Nanaimo Centre at 80 Commercial St. in the Dodd Narrows Room.
