Coffee Drinkers Lower Risk of Dementia

Lead researcher Dr. Miia Kivipelto was surprised that the study showed such a large risk reduction amongst coffee drinkers.

Dr. Kivipelto of University of Kuopio, Finland and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm headed a study which followed 1400 people for 21 years to find who later developed dementia. They found a significant lower risk among coffee drinkers.

The lowest risk, a 65% decreased risk, was found in people who drank 3 to 5 cups of coffee daily when they were 50 years of age.

These results are published in this month's issue of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease adding to other studies which have shown caffeine does stimulate brain function. Studies have shown the more people engage in mental stimulation, the lower their risk of dementia. It is the "use it or lose it" principle which does seem to hold regards dementia.

Dr. J. Diamond, scientific director of the Alzheimer Society of Canada is quoted as saying "the sensitization of brain activity by coffee, may be the equivalent to using your brain more".

It is noted that this study needs to be confirmed by other studies and that other factors could also contribute to the lower risk of dementia among those studied.

There have been several other studies done which seem to indicate that moderate coffee drinking does have some health benefits.
