Nanaimo City Council Pay Increase Formula Changes

The local daily reports that City Councillors have decided not to take a pay increase of 16% as determined by an old formula. Under the old formula council raises were to be based on raises paid in 10 other BC municipalities.

Instead they have agreed to have their salaries tied to a cost of living index which has ranged from 1.8% - 2.2% since 2000.

Councillor Jim Kipp had raised the question of council having their wages frozen in light of the current economic situation. At that time some councillors expressed their opinion that they should receive the increase as allowed under the old formula.

However, all now agree to the new forumula. Which makes both financial and political sense.

Way to go.
