Vancouver Island University Sex Offender Sought

Investigation Continues

Nanaimo RCMP and Vancouver Island personnel are working collaboratively to deal with a number of sexual incidents involving Vancouver Island University(VIU) female students.

Since the middle of January to March 6 there have been at least four incidents reported on campus and several off campus in which a male approaches a female and touches them in an inappropriate sexual manner or commits an indecent act in front of them. None of the reports involved acts of violence but each student was certainly affected by the encounter.

Police are presently interviewing witnesses and have not ruled out the possibility of more than one suspect involved.
The male or males involved are believed to be between 5 ft 8 and 5 ft 10,mid to late 20's and either caucausian or has a dark complexion. Clothing worn consists of a grey or dark colored hoodie and dark colored baggie pants. It was also noted that one of the suspects may have a lazy left eye.

A press conference was held at Vancouver Island University March 11 at 11:00 am where Constable Gary O’Brien and Toni O’Keefe Communications Strategist for VIU spoke on the investigation and what each is doing to ensure the safety of all persons while on campus.

“The Nanaimo RCMP wants to reassure the residents of Harewood and students and staff attending VIU that these incidents are being actively investigated and members have increased patrol and are consulting with VIU staff to put in place safety measures to ensure the continued safety of all persons attending VIU” said Constable Gary O’Brien Media spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP.
“Personal safety measures are essential not only now but throughout the year and need to be practiced by all females when walking and going about their daily activities” says Constable Gary O’Brien.”The buddy system is a good deterrent and having a personal alarm or whistle with you to activate is also useful in preventing these type of incidents.VIU is also instituting a safe walk program for any student or staff while on campus”.

Any one with information on these incidents are asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
