Want Your Nanaimo CityTaxes To Rise?

Let Council Know How You Feel
If Another $540 /Yr. Is Too Much

We elected the current Mayor and Council a short time ago and one of the issues facing this and all Councils is 'taxes'.

Unless the new City Council sharpens their pencils and the average citizen quits asking for more and more services; taxes are expected to increase by over 26% in the next five years, this combined with increased water fees could see average taxes increase by $540* in the next five years.

So where do we all think this money is going to come from? Good paying jobs are vanishing all over the place and even the service sector is expected to feel some pain during our present economic uncertainty. December saw some 500 jobs vanish in Nanaimo and most people expect more to come in the future.

The best paying jobs in Nanaimo for the most part are paid by the taxpayer, these people are not affected by such increases as severely as the average person working in the private sector, or the person living on a fixed income. If you are working in the average retail or service sector, another $540 a year in taxes is a BIG deal.

Council will be addressing the issue of taxes at tonights Council meeting, if you want to see them tighten up on spending and keep your taxes down, let them know how you feel. Remember most elected officials only hear from special interest groups who want money for their own purpose. Of course that money has to come from the taxpayer as the City has no money of it's own.

*Note:
For the purpose of this article the tax increase is based on a 5.3% increase in each of the next five years which would have a compounding effect of increasing taxes by $475. When you add the additional water fee increase of $65 you have a total increase of $540.
