Welfare Users Up in Nanaimo

437 More On Welfare Than Jan. '08

The local daily says that the number of people relying on welfare to keep body and soul together has increased by 42% over the same month last year.

No doubt the current economic situation and increased unemployment has added to the pressure put on the welfare system and also the local food banks. Anyone who can help the food banks meet the growing demand should do what they can to assist.

What the 'numbers' don't show is how many people using the welfare system have been residents of Nanaimo and how many are people who have migrated to the area recently. Since the unemployment numbers for Nanaimo are still relatively low compared to other places in Canada and in fact even in B.C.
