BC Ferries Queen of New Westminster Back In Service

QUEEN OF NEW WESTMINSTER RETURNS
TO SERVICE AFTER $56M UPGRADE

VICTORIA – The completely refurbished Queen of New Westminster is now back in service following an extensive upgrade at Vancouver Drydock in North Vancouver. BC Ferries spent over $56 million on
this 14-month major vessel upgrade project.

The Queen of New Westminster upgrade includes safety upgrades, passenger accommodation
improvements, engineering upgrades, and maintenance work. In addition, the vessel has been outfitted with four new state-of-the-art marine evacuation systems.

Some of the major project work included the following:

• New and improved passenger seating areas
• New interior design
• Updated washrooms
• New food service facilities
• Expanded and remodelled Passages gift shop
• New Seawest lounge
• Modernization of service functions such as HVAC systems
• All new fire and sprinkler pumps
• New bow thruster, service generator, emergency generator and boiler
• Installation of new lifesaving equipment, slides and rescue boats
• New electronic propulsion controls
• Rebuild of drive train, shafts and gearboxes

The Queen of New Westminster will sail on BC Ferries’ Tsawwassen – Swartz Bay route, joining
the new Coastal Celebration and two Spirit Class vessels on the run. Prior to the asset betterment project, the Queen of New Westminster sailed on the Tsawwassen – Duke Point route.

Over the past six years, BC Ferries has completed similar investment projects on the Queens of
Coquitlam, Cowichan, Oak Bay, Surrey and Alberni. Customer service enhancements have also been made on the two Spirit Class vessels, the Queen of Nanaimo, the Howe Sound Queen and the Queen of Burnaby.
