Globe Bar & Grill Closed For Night

Bar Manager Arrested
Serving 'Patched' Hells Angels

A local bar in Nanaimo was closed by RCMP on Saturday night and approximately 100 unhappy patrons were sent packing after the bar manager was arrested for assaulting a police officer.

The incident began when members conducting foot patrols as per Nanaimo Detachments Liquor Control Strategy, noticed several members of a local motorcycle gang inside the Globe Bar and grill located at 25 front St Nanaimo, wearing their gang colors.

Sufficient members were then brought into the bar to deal with the issue. No problems were associated with their removal and after 15 minutes they had left the bar without incident .

The manager of the bar was then approached and it appeared to the officers he was experiencing some “mental health issues”. He was arrested under the provisions of the Mental Health Act and in doing so the 36 year old male allegedly attempted to assault the arresting officers and burn one of them with a cigarette. He was taken into custody and transported to the Nanaimo RCMP Detachment where he was later released on a Promise to Appear for Assault .

Due to the removal of the manager there was no one in a position to effectively run the establishment and therefore the officers decided to close it. Approximately one hundred unhappy patrons were escorted outside and left the area without incident.

“All businesses have a responsibility to ensure there is a person in charge of its operations and that was not satisfied in this instance” stated Constable Gary O’Brien Media spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP. Also allowing members of known criminal organizations to wear gang colors in a licensed liquor establishment is in contravention of the Downtown Nanaimo Good Neighbor Agreement, of which the Globe Bar and Grill is part of” said Cst O’Brien.

The liquor license issued to the Globe Bar and Grill will be reviewed by the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch at a later date and a determination will be made at that time what sanctions if any will be applied.
