Maffeo Sutton Improvement Project

"Spirit Square" Phase
Coming Right Along

The crew from StoneScape Contracting is working six days a week laying the interlocking pavers which are a large part of the project. The local company will have installed approximately 350,000 interlocking paving stones by the time the project is completed.

Creating the intricate patterns on such a large project requires lots of skill and many 'tricks of the trade' as any of us weekend warriors can appreciate who have tried to install a short walkway in a straight line with questionable results!

The $1.8 million project was partially funded by the provincial government with a total of $500,000 coming from Victoria.

The Spirit Square is the first of a five phase improvement plan designed to transform Maffeo Sutton Park into a premiere waterfront park in the future. It provides an inviting entrance to the park and is intended to be a community gathering place.

It may appear that overall parking has been reduced, however with the opening of additional parking in the immediate area there will be a total of 230 more parking spaces available for those driving to events in the park.

Landscape planting is designed to provide foliage of interest year round with special attention being given to plants needs in such a waterfront location. Things like salt spray and pedestrian traffic are all factored in to the plant selection process.

The first official function in Spirit Square is planned for June 7 with the Children's Festival and while there may still be a few 'finishing touches' to be done, the project is scheduled to be complete by then.

No doubt this will be a most inviting improvement and just another jewel in the crown of our magnificient waterfront.

Kudos to all the hard working folk in the Parks and Recreation department who have toiled many hours to see this project come to completion.
