Nanaimo RCMP Start Speed Watch Campaign Today

"2 Strikes" Campaign Starts Today

The ICBC sponsored Speed Watch campaign kicks off in Nanaimo on Friday May 15th and Nanaimo RCMP are challenging the motoring public to shut them out from writing any speeding tickets on that day.

The Nanaimo RCMP will be conducting a speed enforcement campaign beginning Friday morning morning entitled “2 Strikes”. This program sponsored by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia(ICBC) will involve the use of several speed boards maned by volunteers working with the Nanaimo RCMP Speed watch program. These speed boards display vehicle speed as they approach and they will be located at various intersections throughout Nanaimo.

Drivers will have the opportunity to see their vehicle speed and slow down if they are exceeding the posted speed limit. After passing through at least two speed boards regular members will be waiting and will be monitoring vehicle speed with radars. Speeding tickets will then be issued where appropriate under the Motor Vehicle Act .”We are hoping that no tickets will be issued on Friday, unfortunately though many drivers will not heed the warning” stated Constable Gary O’Brien Media Relations spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP

“Speed is the number one contributor to accidents on our roads and highways. These boards are a proven deterrent to reducing vehicle speeds and preventing accidents from occurring. Prevention and education, which is what this program hopes to achieve are tried and proven means for keeping our streets safe. We hope the motoring public get the message and prove us wrong on Friday and no tickets are issued ”said Constable Gary O’Brien Media spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP.

“This ICBC sponsored initiative is just one of our Detachments contributions to National Safety Week launched Monday May 11 and continues through the long weekend and end Sunday May 15. Motorists can expect our traffic unit members to be out in enforcing speed limits throughout the long weekend” said Constable O’Brien.

Our media partners are invited to come out and view this initiative on Friday May 15. For those interested please meet at 10:00 am at the Long Lake pullout located just north of Norwell Rd at the Rutherford Rd/Mostar Rd intersection.
