Another Garden Drama

Peril In The Petals

I spotted this little bit of drama while tending my flower garden yesterday.

Nestled in the petals of a light pink Peony is a small white spider with a most effective hunting practice.

He does not spin a web to entrap his victims, rather he nestles in the petals where he is well disguised with his two front legs wide apart, resembling a set spring trap. He will sit like that for hours, unmoving and perfectly hidden.

Then when some hapless insect ( I have seen flies and bees ) comes to investigate the lovely flower . . . . . . . . wham, with the speed of light the spider strikes, usually piercing his victims head with his fangs and grabbing on with his legs.

The venom injected must pack quite a punch as he can disable a full size honey bee in seconds.

The only thing my wife and I are unsure of is the possible gender of the beast, being male I tend to think it displays female characteristics ..... :^). Needless to say my wife disagrees!

In any case, it is just one more example of the dog eat dog world that exists, and many of these little dramas are played out for the most part completely unnoticed, as we all play out our own little dramas.
