Nearly 30 competitors left Nanaimo harbour Saturday morning as the Van Isle 360 Yacht Race got underway.

Racers will take approximately two weeks to circle Vancouver Island arriving back in Nanaimo June 21. The race had been known as the 'Cadillac' Van Isle 360, but with the current conditions at GM Cadillac no longer sponsored the event.

This year the event is known as the 'Save On' Van Isle 360 with the BC food giant picking up the tab to sponsor the event.

The Canadian Navy's 31 metre sail training yacht the HMCS Oriole was on hand for the event, she is the ship in the second picture with the colourful sail.

The sailors got a good breeze to kick off the start of the race which was enjoyed by many lining the visitors dock to see them off.
