Canada Day In Nanaimo

Parade of Flags Kicks Off Celebration

Maffeo Sutton Park and the new Spirit Square hosted thousands of Nanaimo residents under sunny skies on Canada Day.

Local dignitaries led the parade of flags along the walk beside Syw-a-lana lagoon and ended at the Lion's Pavillion. There the Nanaimo Tidesman led the crowd in the singing of our National Anthem. In typical Canadian fashion, few people in the crowd joined in.

The park was filled with predominantly younger people and young families out for a day where you don't have to take out a mortgage to do something fun. There was lots of variety to choose from in the way of multi-cultural foods and many information booths and displays of interest to all.

One suggestion for next year however:
How come little ole Parksville figures out how to have a midway and fireworks and we don't?
