'Man's Best Friend' Rules In Nanaimo

If you own a dog in the City of Nanaimo there are certain rules and regulations you should be aware of, follows are some of the rules which apply to all dogs and their owners.

Every dog in the City of Nanaimo must be licensed ($25 fee) and wear the metal tag provided at all times. This enables authorities to contact you in the event your dog is impounded or injured in an accident.

Owners are required to remove their dog's faeces from city parks and boulevards. Failure to do so can result in a fine not exceeding $500, and is just the responsible thing to do.

All dogs must be on a leash and under the control of a competent person when they are not on the owner's property.

Some control of dog offences and subsequent fines:

  • Dog at large .. $100.00
  • Restricted/vicious dog not muzzled ..$500.00
  • Fail to enclose a vicious or restricted dog .. $500.00
  • Dog in a cemetery .. $100.00
  • Fail to License a dog .. $50.00
  • Fail to display dog tag .. $50.00
  • On a public beach during months of May - September .. $50.00
  • Fail to remove dog faeces from park or boulevard .. not exceeding $500.00
  • On deck of any wading or spray pool .. $50.00

Impound Fees;

  • To impound a licensed dog, $30.00 for the first offense, $70.00 for the second and $100 for all subsequent offences.
  • To impound an unlicensed dog is $100.00.
  • To impound a vicious or restricted dog, $500.00 for the first offense and $1,000.00 for subsequent offenses.
  • To impound a vicious or restricted dog which has caused injury to a person or animal is $1,000.00

  2. I wouldn't think so but to be absolutely certain you should call Bylaw Enforcement at the City Hall.

  3. Puppies need a licence after reaching the age of 12 weeks. I think it's Bylaws 4923 and 5727.

  4. I just moved in to city limits, I want to register my dog but she's pretty old now.. About 10 and gets super car sick. I was wondering if I have to bring her to the pound or city hall to get her registered?

  9. I don't know about a kennel license but if you call 250-754-4251 during regular office hours, they will be able to tell you.
