Punks Damage 30 Vehicles

Police Arrest Two Punks
After Senseless Destruction

Two youths were arrested early this morning after causing $1000's of dollars in damage after going on a vandalism spree early today.

The youths ages 16 and 17 were arrested by officers at approximately 4:30 am in the area of Cadogan St. after neighbours complained of damage to their vehicles and seeing several youth on the street. The youth ,known to police and currently in the charge category for other property related offences, were found with items believed to have been taken from nearby vehicles .A knife was also located on one of the youths and officers believe it was used to randomly slash tires on selected vehicles.

Investigators were busy all day tallying up the carnage. It is believed at least thirty vehicles had one and sometimes two tires slashed. Some vehicles were broken and items taken while at least two were pushed down streets and steered deliberately into telephone poles. None of those vehicles were seriously damaged.

The two youths were held in custody while investigators attempted to determine exactly how many vehicles had been targetted and spent most of the day attempting to reach registered owners. The RCMP Forensic Unit was also busy as a number of the vehicles were examined for forensic evidence.

"Officers believed most of the carnage occurred between 2:00 am and 4:00 am today.Parents of the youth were contacted and are supportive of actions taken by police. Investigators hope to speak with the youths tonight and try to get them to explain,if possible, why they would participate in such senseless acts of wanton destruction".Alcohol was involved but is not considered to be a mitigating factor".

Both youth face multiple counts of Mishchief,Possession of Stolen Property,Theft and possibly weapons charges and breach of their current Criminal Code conditions.

Anyone who believes their vehicle was broken into over night in the area of Albert and Prideaux St,Calendonia Ave ,St,Millstream Ave ,St Andrews St and Cadogan St are asked to call the non-emergency number of the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.

Editor's Note: The law needs to quit coddling these young thugs who hide behind the young offenders act and bring their faces out into the light of day. Perhaps holding the parents responsible for their actions, or making these punks actually pay for the damage they cause is a partial solution. They clearly need to be removed from society for a good long time.
