Nanaimo Cruise Ship Dock Goes Ahead

Federal Funds Assure
Cruise Ship Dock

MP James Lunney announced the federal government will be contributing nearly $9 million towards the building of a floating cruise ship wharf in downtown Nanaimo.

The new dock will be on the site of the assembly wharf with construction slated to begin soon. It is expected to be complete by the end of 2010. The new design will incorporate a floating wharf which was chosen after it became evident dredging for the original plan would not be feasible.

In addition to the wharf there will be a welcome centre and a market on the site where visitors from the large and smaller cruise ships will be coming ashore directly without the aid of tenders.

The construction is expected to provide some 70 high paying full time jobs which is of course a welcome addition to the local economy.
