Next weekend will see the largest fund raiser ever undertaken by the Nanaimo RCMP all in support of the Nanaimo Special Olympics program.

Commencing Friday Sept 11th at 5 pm, Constable Norm Smith will be hoisted high above Walmart, located at the Woodgrove Centre and placed on scaffolding. There he will remain for 48 hours and will not come down until Sunday Sept 13th at 5pm.During Cst Smith’s vigil, pledges will be accepted by volunteers on phone lines provided by Telus. These phone lines will run from Friday at 5 pm to 9 pm ,Saturday from 11 am to 7 pm and again on Sunday, from 11 am to 5 pm. The number to call is 250-390-RCMP(7269)

Cst Smith’s commitment to the weekend is just one of the many events planned. On Saturday Sept 12th, from 12 pm to 5 pm, Richard Brodeur, arguably one of the best goaltenders ever to wear a Vancouver Canucks jersey, will be on hand signing autographs and various items. Also attending, will be the former Canucks enforcer Gino Odjick. In conjunction with their appearances, Rocky Mountain marketing will be running a silent auction and sale of sports memorabilia.

Live entertainment will be provided through out the weekend by local bands and various celebrities will be taking their place along side Cst Smith to help raise funds. Save on Foods will be hosting a BBQ on Saturday and Sunday afternoon by donation and two Bouncy Castles will be on hand for the little ones. Raffle tickets will also be sold, highlighted by the grand prize of a 48"LCD flat screen TV, donated by Walmart, valued at over $1100 dollars. Island Radio and A Channel News, two other significant sponsors of this event will also be on hand to raise the profile.

Saturday will show case many of the officers and resources Nanaimo RCMP has to offer. Emergency Response Team members, Tactical Team members and other officers in visible roles within our community will be hand to display their wares and answer your questions. Sunday will be athletics day with representatives from the Nanaimo Jr A Clippers and Vancouver Island Raiders on hand to interact with the kids and play some games from their respective sports. Also taking place over the weekend will be a massive ball hockey tournament, provided by Harris Mitsubishi. One very special game to be played on the weekend will see the Special Olympians battle against the RCMP members.

Our organizing committee has been working extremely hard on this event for some time and we think we have something for every one. The Nanaimo RCMP are proud to sponsor our Special Olympians and all proceeds raised will go to our local program and assist these deserving athletes compete at provincial, national and international events.
