The following bid opportunity appears on the City of Nanaimo website and is self explanatory:

VICC HOTEL MARKETING


The City of Nanaimo is looking to create a developer attraction strategy for the sale of municipally owned property for the purpose of building a hotel adjacent to the Vancouver Island Conference Centre.

This request for proposal is to contract a real estate professional who has the requisite experience, understands the political sensitivities in the community and is effective at responding to Council’s needs regarding these sensitivities.

Proponents are required to submit five (5) copies of their proposal in a sealed envelope, clearly marked "RFP-9-2009 Realtor Consultant Services - VICC". Proposals must be received by the Purchasing Manager, Purchasing Department up to 2:00 PM local time, October 22, 2009 at the Purchasing Office, City of Nanaimo 2020 Labieux Road, Nanaimo, BC, V9T 6J9. Proposals received after the noted due time will not be considered. Proposals must be submitted in hardcopy form not email or fax.

It is the sole responsibility of the person(s) submitting to deliver the proposal to the City of Nanaimo Purchasing Office before the closing time.

The City of Nanaimo reserves the right to negotiate with the preferred proponent.

Comments: How much money is the City willing to pay this prospector even if he/she is unsuccessful in their bid to secure a builder? How much more taxpayer money is the City willing to spend to develop the convention business in Nanaimo? Is there actually any real sound business evidence this centre will ever attract the larger conventions just because there is a new hotel nearby?
