City Manager's Severance Package Petition

Petition Calls For Independent Review
City Manager's Severance Package

The above online petition calls for the Ombudsman of British Columbia and the Minister of Community and Rural Development to review the circumstances behind and the decision to pay retiring city manager Mr. J. Berry the sum of $480,000.00.

The idea that city council and a couple of lawyers can agree to spend nearly half a million tax dollars without a clear explanation is not only distasteful but also sets a potentially costly precedent for future 'early retirements' from the city of Nanaimo.

The petition states:

"We the undersigned as taxpayers in the City of Nanaimo wish to initiate an independent investigation/review of the recent decision of Nanaimo City Council to pay retiring city manager Mr. J. Berry $480,000.00 to take an early retirement. We are of the opinion that anyone taking an early retirement voluntarily should not be entitled to a severance package the equivalent of their full time salary. This constitutes paying someone full wages and benefits for no benefit the taxpayer of Nanaimo. Further we feel this establishes a very wrong and potentially costly precedent for the taxpayers of Nanaimo."

Please Note: You do not have to be a property owner to sign this petition, if you are living in the City of Nanaimo you can sign this petition. Renting or buying, we all pay taxes to the City of Nanaimo.
