Burn It Smart Campaign Begins

Burn It Smart Nanaimo

It is definitely fall in Nanaimo and there is nothing to take the chill off like a crackling wood fire and cup of hot chocolate.

Nothing quite compares to the comfort a properly built wood fire can bring to your home, but doing it properly takes some knowledge and practice.

If you have a lot of smoke coming from your chimney, or if you can smell it long after your fire has been burning you need to learn the art of heating properly with wood.

With today's wood burning stoves, the proper type of wood and some knowledge on your part, wood heat is environmentally friendly and easier on your pocket book than gas or hydro. It is a good renewable form of energy, and when properly burned should put nothing but carbon dioxide and water vapour into the atmosphere.

To learn how to safely and efficiently heat your home with wood you need to attend one of the 'Burn It Smart' workshops being put on this month.

In the south end there is a workshop on Thursday Nov. 26 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm at Fire Station #4, 1425 Cranberry Ave.

In the north end there is a workshop on Friday Nov. 27 from 2:00 - 3:30 pm at Kin Hut Activity Centre, 2730 Departure Bay Rd.

Nanaimo "Burn It Smart" is a partnership of the City of Nanaimo, the BC Ministry of Environment, the Wood Energy Technicians of BC and the BC Lung Association.

To learn more about residential wood heating there is a great resource from the Canadian government you can find using this Nanaimo Info LINK. The City of Nanaimo has a good information webpage at this LINK.
