An RCMP puppy that went missing Sunday night has been located and is in good health. The puppy known as Brando, a nine week old German Shepard, was being transported to Parksville Sunday by an off duty Nanaimo police officer. At some point during the trip, Brando, who was secured in his crate, fell out of the bed of the pickup. It was believed this incident occurred around 6:30 pm, in or around the area of 7th St and Howard Ave.

"Brando was found because of the keen observation skills of a ten year old boy. This boy heard the crate fall to the ground and then watched another motorist stop, get out, and begin to load it into their SUV. The boy told his mother, who went out and spoke with the driver, obtaining their name and phone number. This information was then forwarded to our office in the morning. “Our members attended the home, and found Brando in good health”, said Constable Gary O’Brien, media spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP. “The Nanaimo RCMP would like to extend our sincere appreciation to this youth for his actions in this instance”, said O’Brien.

A review of the circumstances leading up to this incident, including errors made by the officer, has been conducted. “This officer has chosen a career path which allows him to work and care for animals. He feels terrible for allowing this to happen, and understands the potential outcome his actions could have had”, states Cst. O’Brien. “Mistakes were made, that will not be repeated, and he is thankful that Brando is safe, and well.”
