Officer Karl Lilgert ChargedWith Criminal Negligence
It is reported in the Times Colonist that charges have been sworn in Provincial Court today, against Karl Lilgert.
Former B.C. Ferries bridge officer Karl Lilgert has been charged with criminal negligence causing death, four years after two people drowned when the Queen of the North veered off course and sank off the northern tip of Vancouver Island.
The B.C. Ferry was sailing to Port Hardy from Prince Rupert when it failed to make a critical turn in Wright Sound and struck the north-east side of Gil Island at 12:22 a.m.
Fifty-seven passengers and 42 crew members abandoned ship before it sank. Two people -- Shirley Rosette and Gerald Foisy -- were never found and have been declared dead. Out-of-court settlements have been reached with the victims' families.
The charges were sworn in Vancouver Provincial Court today. Lilgert’s next court appearance has been scheduled for April 14.
