Charged With Assault, Drug Trafficking

A report of domestic violence has resulted in the arrest of a male and the search of his apartment with the seizure of over $50,000 dollars in Canadian currency and a quantity of cocaine.

Members became involved early Friday night after information was received of a possible domestic violence situation in which a female feared for her life. General Duty members quickly assessed the situation and located the victim and ensured her safety. The possible suspect in the domestic violence incident was also located several hours later and arrested on allegations of assault with a weapon and Uttering Threats.

RCMP then carried on with their investigation and it culminated in the members applying for and being granted a search warrant for the male’s apartment and vehicle. Their search located $51,260 in Canadian currency and over 30 ounces of cocaine and crack cocaine.

Mathew Robert RECKNAGEL age 35 was remanded into custody and is charged with Assault Causing Bodily Harm, two counts of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking and Uttering Threats to cause bodily harm.

“This situation was resolved because our General Duty members went above and beyond to resolve an extremely volatile situation. This investigation began early Friday night and did not wrap up until  late Saturday afternoon. Our officers not only ensured the safety of those involved but then applied for and were granted judicial authorization to search the accused apartment and vehicle and found the controlled substances. Ironically, the accused was not on our radar and has had limited contact with members” said Constable Gary O’Brien, media spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP.
