Nanaimo Jobless Rate Increases

Nanaimo Jobless Rate 9% May 2010
Up From 7.4% May 2009

British Columbia and specifically Nanaimo are going against the national trend of adding jobs and employing more people.

The province shed 10,000 jobs and the jobless rate jumped .2% while in Nanaimo the jobless rate increased by 1.6%. This means that there are now 5200 people in Nanaimo who are unemployed compared with 4200 this time last year.

Local food banks and organizations who help put food in people's stomachs are already feeling the pinch with reduced government funding at a time when pressure for their services are increasing.
