Video Shows Use Of Fitness Equipment

To celebrate Seniors’ Week in British Columbia, a series of short videos has been launched online showing older adults how to properly use equipment at many of the ActNow BC Community Seniors Parks located throughout the province, announced Ida Chong, Minister of Healthy Living and Sport.

“As we get older, one of the ways we can continue to lead a healthy lifestyle is by being more physically active,” said Chong. “ActNow BC’s new seniors’ videos instruct older adults to perform simple physical activities that build strength and endurance by using the equipment at our province’s seniors’ community parks.”

Eleven individual videos show older adults how to use equipment available at 12 of the parks, which includes the cardio stepper, balance steps, squat press, balance beam, tai chi wheels and chest press. In the videos, exercises are demonstrated by an ActNow BC senior ambassador, with the help of a personal trainer.

The videos, along with questions and answers about using the parks’ equipment, are available on ActNow BC’s website at www.actnowbc.ca/seniorsvideos/.

In Nanaimo HealthBeat fitness equipment is at the Oliver Woods Community Center at 6,000 Oliver Road.
“The launch of ActNow BC’s new seniors videos on the ActNow BC website is a great way to celebrate B.C. Seniors’ Week across the province,” said Mary McNeil, Minister of State for the Olympics and ActNow BC. “Our government is committed to building the best system of support in Canada for older adults through investments in innovative partnerships, along with programs and services, including these resourceful videos.”

In 2008, the Province committed $1.8 million to establish 18 ActNow BC Seniors Community Parks to encourage older adults to be more physically active, and provide opportunities for social interaction. Local governments provided land, site preparation and ongoing maintenance for each park location.
