Boating Accident On Shuswap Lake Kills One

Speedboat Completely Inside Houseboat

This story has no connection with anyone from Nanaimo, but we do have a lot of boaters on the Island and particularly in Nanaimo, so the message is loud and clear about the consequences of reckless boating.

Apparently on the evening of July 3 a large number of boaters were on Shuswap Lake to watch the fireworks. After the show on an evening described as wonderful with clear skies, the above speedboat traveling at obviously a high rate of speed collided head on with the houseboat.

The impact killed the operator of the houseboat and launched the speedboat right into the interior of the houseboat. Clearly the speedboat operator was not using common sense to be traveling at such high speed in a crowded area, there were estimates of at least 400 boats in the area.

It just goes to show that an operators card just can't replace common sense when it comes to the operation of a motor boat.
