New Feathered Feeder Visitors

Band-tailed Pigeons

As I have mentioned before on this blog, my wife and I have continued putting out feed in our bird feeder not knowing what birds (if any) would continue to visit in the summertime when natural food is plentiful.

The other morning I looked out to see one of the above pigeons sitting in our feeder. After taking a few hesitant pecks at the offering, he left. I did not expect to see him again but the following morning he showed up, this time with this mate (I presume) and boy, can these guys pack away the groceries!

I don't know if they are 'just passing by' or have taken up residence in the area but they are very distinct and differently marked from other pigeons we have seen. At first we thought they were a pair of doves, but have since learned otherwise.

It has been at least five days now, and they are regulars at the feeder, much to the dismay of the usual visitors such as chick-a-dees, sparrows, finches  and the like which simply have to respect the 'pecking order' when this pair makes their appearance.

They have always got their early warning systems working and the slightest noise will send them into the nearby Arbutus.

I had expected by now the feeder would be pretty much left alone, but am pleased to see I was wrong.
