Resident Fights Off Thief

At approximately 5am this morning Theresa McBride walked out to the front of her home on Wren Place located in College Heights and noticed the dome light was on in her truck parked in the driveway. When she went to investigate she found a male inside the vehicle rummaging through the interior.

McBride, obviously startled, confronted the suspect and a struggle ensued for which she received minor injuries.

In the scuffle this male dropped a large ring of auto keys which investigators believe are typically used to gain entry into a number of different makes and models of vehicles. Although the suspect fled the area and was not located, based on descriptors provided investigators are confident they will be able to identify the suspect. The suspect broke into a 2003 Ford F350 pick up truck, one of the top five vehicles targeted by thieves on Vancouver Island.

“We never advocate for the public to engage in any kind of physical confrontation with a thief or some one committing a crime against them. A person can be seriously injured in the process. We encourage people to call 911 immediately to report the criminal activity, giving detailed descriptions of the suspect and noting any vehicles in the area” , said Cst Sue Phillips, media spokesperson for Nanaimo RCMP.
