Water Helps Suppress Appetite

Virginia Tech researchers have found that simply drinking 2-8oz. glasses of water 20 minutes before a meal helps dieters lose pounds. On average those who drank water before their meal lost 2.3 kilograms more over 12 weeks than dieters who did not drink the water.

During a controlled study involving 48 adults, age 55 to 75 the group which drank two cups of water before each meal lost 15 1/2 pounds over a 12 week period compared with a loss of 11 pounds for the group not drinking water before their meals.

The group which drank the water were also more successful over a 12 month period in maintaining their weight loss. Water fills the stomach, increasing the feelings of fullness and it is also possible the water is substituting for drinking sugary soft drinks. The average adult drinks about 400 calories of beverages a day which those drinking water seem to avoid.
