Pushed 99 Year Old To Ground
Breaking His Hip
Nanaimo RCMP are pleased to announce an arrest has been made in the incident reported on last week in which a 99 year old male sustained a broken hip after being pushed to the ground by a fleeing shoplifter.
Robert Wesley RUSSELL, age 27, of no fixed address was arrested without incident on Sunday August 14th at 9:30 AM in the north end of Nanaimo.Charges of Theft and Uttering Threats were later laid against him. An additional charge of Criminal Negligence Causing Bodily Harm has been laid in connection with the injury to the elderly male.
To assist in identifying the suspect, Nanaimo RCMP released a photo and short video clip of the male which garnered not only provincial but national attention. The resulting coverage was extremely useful and generated some useful tips which assisted the officers in their investigation.
“The public and our members were incensed by this callous act and are pleased to have the person allegedly responsible for this crime behind bars” said Constable Gary O’Brien, media spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP. ”We would also like to thank our local media partners for their role in this investigation. This is another excellent example of police and media working together to keep our communities safe” said O’Brien.
The elderly male underwent surgery last week to repair his broken hip however there have been some complications and he is expected to remain in hospital for some time. RUSSELL will be making an appearance in Nanaimo Provincial court some time today and a decision will be made at that time on whether or not he will be remanded into custody.
