Westwood Lake Drowning

Seven Year Old Nanaimo Girl Drowns

A sad end to a day in the sun at the popular Nanaimo freshwater beach at Westwood Lake.

A young Nanaimo girl was noticed below the surface by a tourist from Alberta. The girl was rushed to shore and lifeguards performed CPR for at least 25 minutes. After being rushed to Nanaimo Hospital the girl was pronounced dead a short time later in the company of her mother.

The girl was at the lake with a Cedar-based day camp with a group of 13 children. The group was being overseen by five caregivers at the time. What actually happened will be the subject of investigation over the next day or so by police and the coroner's office.

Everyone involved with the tragedy were reported to be quite shaken up by the whole affair.

Westwood Lake is the only Nanaimo beach with lifeguards and several were on duty at the time. The last death at the Lake occurred in 2007 when a 24 year old man died swimming in the unsupervised area of the lake.
